Good News For Us Young Hopefuls: UiTM National Novice Debating Championship 2009

Posted on March 5, 2009

The UT MARA English Debating Society will be organizing the National Novice Debating Championship, the largest ever national English debating tournament on the 7 and 8 of March, at the Science and Technology tower (Engineering Faculty) Universiti Teknologi MARA. 70 teams from different secondary and tertiary institutions will be participating, making it to date the largest single language debating championship in Malaysia.

The format of this tournament is Asian Parliamentary style, which is three-on-three, with the debaters giving seven minute speeches, and a four minute reply speech. The team cap was previously 50 teams, but due to overwhelming response, the organizing committee allowed for another 20 teams, although there were many other teams that had to be denied participation.

The objective of this tournament is to expose up and coming English debaters to the national debating scene, as well as to give them a chance to show off their oratory and critical thinking skills when they debate about issues ranging from welfare to the situation in Somalia. Malaysian English debaters have achieved global recognition, but this tournament moves to increase the level of our English debating scene.

The tournament started in 2005 with the aim to ensure junior development effort by Malaysian varsities could be enhanced. The tournament will bring together schools as well as novice debaters to fight it out to see who the best is among the newcomers.
